Navicular Syndrome can be a difficult group of diseases to address. Proper diagnosis to help direct appropriate treatments is essential to the overall success and return to athletic performance of these horses.
The use of diagnostic nerve & joint blocks, high quality radiographs, ultrasound, and even nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) may all be necessary to understand each individual horse.
Navicular Syndrome no longer has to end an athletic career. Instead it has become a long term management issue with many treatment options.
These include, but are not limited to:
Egg bar shoes
Isoxuprine
Arquel (currently in limited supply)
Bute
Hyaluronic acid
Steroid injection
Shock wave therapy
Surgery (Palmar Digital Neurectomy)
The type(s) of Navicular involved and the intended athletic performance for each athlete set the goals for treatment.
THESE CONDITIONS CAN OFTEN BE MANAGED SUCCESSFULLY FOR MANY YEARS!
